Hello and welcome to Intelvestor. This site was created and is being run as a community and a tool to allow individual investors to make intelligent investment choices. In the world of stock trading it is very easy to make mistakes by engaging in speculative decision making that often lead to disastrous results. It takes discipline and knowledge to avoid the hype and not get burned by overvalued stocks. Many remember the "dot com" bubble burst that left a lot of people's portfolios in ruins. A lot of people were turned off the stock market by the losses they suffered. This was, of course, not the only occasion in the history of finance when a crash like this happened.
Stock market, however, can and should be a good opportunity for investment. One idea on how to move from dangerous speculations to a sound investment strategy is to analyze the stock's fundamentals and select the stocks with certain criteria that make it both profitable and safe in the long run. This idea was verbalized by Benjamin Graham in his famous book "The Intelligent Investor" among others. Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors in the world calls this book "By far the best book on investing ever written". Click on the picture above to go to Amazon.com and read what others think about it. Graham suggests a quantitative approach to portfolio building that, if applied correctly and is diverse enough, should yield good results in the long run and be safe enough in case of a market downturn.
Finding such stocks can be difficult and time consuming. It takes time and effort to look through each stock individually. Fortunately, with the advance of technology this process can now be shortened significantly and this is where our site comes in. We allow our users to quickly filter through stocks based on many of the criteria mr. Graham suggested. This way the search for fundamentally sound stocks only takes seconds. Of course, making right investing decisions should not be based on numbers alone, as numbers can, sometimes, be erroneous. We provide links to the publically available SEC database so the users can easily access each company's financial reports and statements for further research. This combination of tools will help our members make intelligent investment decisions. Carefully chosen and diversified stocks (never put all your eggs in one basket) should make for a good, low-risk investment. In addition, it should be noted that it is highly advisable to keep some percentage of your overall investment capital in bonds. Our site's focus, however, is on US stocks only, so we only provide help with the stocks portion of your portfolio.
